NIGHT AWAY TO BANBURY & STRATFORD-UPON-AVON
Our last nightaway to Stratford-upon-Avon was in 2015 and it was much enjoyed. This time we have tickets to see the RSC production of Antony and Cleopatra, directed by Iqbal Khan. Following the death of Julius Caesar, Mark Antony has reached the height of his power and influence. However, he is neglecting his responsibilities when he engages in a decadent seduction of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt.
ITINERARY
Friday: Starting at 7.30am from Lanehouse Tesco, our Bluebird coach will travel via Foord’s Corner, Radipole Spa, Dorchester Tesco, Dorchester Top O’ Town car park, Wimborne Police Station and Blandford Tesco to the Wiltshire market town of Marlborough where coffee and Danish pastries await us. Next, we shall drive through the scenic Cotswolds. At the charming hilltop town of Stow on the Wold there will be time to look around and obtain lunch.
This afternoon you can choose between time at leisure in Chipping Campden or a visit to Sezincote, one of the jewels of the Cotswolds, a very fine mansion built in the Indian style with an English Regency interior. When the Prince Regent saw it he instructed his architect John Nash to redesign his seaside villa at Brighton in a similar style. The cost of entry will be £5 for the gardens or £10 for house and gardens - pay the entry fee on the day if Sezincote interests you. Finally we shall travel to Banbury for Dinner and an overnight stay at the well appointed 3-star Whateley Hall Hotel. It is situated in the centre of the town opposite the famous Banbury cross.
Saturday: After breakfast, we shall travel by coach, into Stratford-upon-Avon - 40 minutes away.
Morning at leisure.
At 1.15pm we shall see Antony and Cleopatra at the brilliantly re-built Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
Alternatively, instead of Stratford today, you can visit Warwick Castle with its impressive State Apartments, displays of archery, and Private Apartments which are presented to show a weekend houseparty in the Edwardian era.
Leaving Warwick at 4.00pm and Stratford once the performance ends. We shall stop for dinner near Marlborough.
We expect to be back in Blandford by 9.30pm, Wimborne by 10pm, Dorchester by 10.30pm and Weymouth by 11pm. These times are approximate.
